A bid went out earlier this year to construct the courts and was awarded to LandTek Group, Inc. who began work this past summer with subcontractor Classic Turf Company.

Mount Vernon Mayor Shawyn Patterson-Howard said delays can be attributed to the COVID-19 pandemic and unknown infrastructure issues that were discovered when construction began.

When the school announced last month it was replacing its old turf field with a new red playing surface, the administration at the school came up with an ingenious idea of selling 100, one-yard pieces of the old field as a keepsake.

“I’m excited to get back out on the field,” East Islip junior wideout/defensive back Derek Burrell said. “Last year [in 2019, actually] we practiced up until Thanksgiving and it got even colder than it is now… I honestly didn’t think we would be out here, but I’m glad we are.”

Moore Catholic’s school colors are red and black. Now, the Maverick colors will be flaunted on a new artificial athletic surface that will soon be installed, according to the school’s athletic director, J.C. Albano.
